“Growing up in the woods of Northern Wisconsin, much of my childhood was spent discovering nature. I have a particularly vivid memory of studying the unfurling coils of a fiddlehead fern, and finding the mystery and beauty of this event to be a moving experience. I have always been intrigued by the strange yet familiar aspects of the natural world, and the relationships between these elements and unknown forces that bring them to life.

In my work, I seek to express the sense of awe and wonder that I experience when contemplating the intricate and fluid nature of reality.  With a fuzzy and ever-shifting boundary between what is known and unknown, our limited understanding of life is constantly in flux. Phenomena that were once considered inexplicable or magical are continually redefined by scientific discovery. With this greater understanding, the collective consciousness expands; perceptions are altered and we begin to think about the world around us in new ways.

In my current installations, I am investigating the relationship between the known and unknown, the visible and invisible, the tangible and intangible.   Trompe l’oeil illusions and sculptural acrylic paintings work in conjunction with actual light and shadow to play with the perceptions of the viewer.  The installations serve as a metaphor for the journey of our personal and shared life experiences.  Ultimately, I seek to create lavish environments that contemplate and reflect the beauty and mysteries of life.”
