Art and Cake’s weekly art calendar has changed. Facebook was getting too tedious trying to cull through so many events each day with their new feature of adding many days to an event. We have decided to post only that weeks events and add more in depth information to help you decide where to go each week. In addition, each week will be a different contributor to keep the content fresh, relevant and edgy.

Highlighting the influential photography of 11 award-winning female photojournalists, the traveling exhibition is on view in Glendale until April 7, 2019. The exhibition is a tribute to the spirit and ambition of these forward-thinking and distinguished female photographers and underscores the momentous work they have done to bring narratives from all over the world to the pages of National Geographic and into the homes of millions of people.

On the closing weekend of “Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush,” LA artists Lili Bernard and Chelle Barbour offer their insights in tours at both CAAM and the ICA LA. The program begins at 1 pm with Bernard at CAAM, and is followed by a 3 pm tour at the ICA LA, culminating in a light reception at 4 pm. Abney’s work refers to diverse subjects such as pop culture, world events, and art history through vibrant and provocative compositions. Artists Bernard and Barbour examine how those themes relate to American society, including Abney’s references to race, sexuality, celebrity culture, and police brutality.

Opening Reception to take place Saturday, January 19 from 7:00-10:00pm.

Subject/Observer is a group exhibition in which a selected group of artists create a chain of portraits using each other as their subjects. Pairings are selected at random, each artist serving as the subject for another’s portrait.

Ultimately this project seeks to investigate the relationships and exchanges that take place when artists attempt understanding through the context of portraiture. Given the various nature of relationships between each artist and subject, a diverse body of work is inevitable. Unrestricted by method or medium, it is hoped that these works can bring into consideration questions of identity, both of the artist and subject, as well as the nature of information exchanged when creating a portrait.

The Subject/Observer project was initiated and curated by Los Angeles based artist Noel Madrid.

Miss Art World is an artist based in Los Angeles, CA. She is an emerging performance artist and has exhibited throughout the country and was honored to perform at Art Basel Miami in 2017. Miss Art World was diagnosed with an incurable eye disease at the age of ten and has struggled seeing ever since. The rejection and prejudices that arose from the academic environment led her to seek out other means of fulfillment; this came in the form of beauty pageants.

Over the years, she participated in pageants winning several titles including Miss New York World. Success in pageantry proved to be both her salvation as well as a burden.

Using her experiences to inform her art practice, Miss Art World critiques the unrealistic display of the “perfected” physical form and the pressures to attain it. She crowned herself Miss Art World and uses the title to question the dominating ideologies of beauty fused society’s disturbing and obsession with it.

“Sheli, be a lady” is a phrase I heard a lot growing up. I never felt like I knew what that meant exactly, but I did feel like I was often doing it wrong. As a girl, dolls became an influential learning tool in deciphering what appropriate femininity entailed. They were coded with messages about motherhood, domesticity, fashion and physical beauty. In “Be A Lady” I use the paper doll as a means to explore the complex process of understanding personal identity within the confines of society’s idea of womanhood. The pieces of my paper doll are symbols of sexuality, vulnerability, confidence, intelligence, physicality and the process of resolving all the facets of one’s self.

Sheli Silverio is a fine artist and illustrator living and working in Los Angeles. She has studied studio arts and humanities at Pasadena City College, California College of the Arts in San Francisco, and California State University Northridge.

​An integral part of the LA Art World, Sheli is a member of the Los Angeles Art Association, The Shed Collective ​and is currently working for Shoebox PR, offering valuable resources to emerging artists. She recently became a board member on the arts non-profit January Arts.

Kristine Schomaker is a multidisciplinary artist and art historian living and working at the Brewery artist complex in Los Angeles, California. She earned her BA in Art History and MA in Studio Art from California State University at Northridge where she studied under Betty Ann Brown and Samantha Fields. In 2014 Kristine founded Shoebox PR aimed at helping artists gain a presence in the art world. It has grown to a company with 3 team members and now represents galleries and art events while still representing individual artists.

Kristine is also the editor of Art and Cake a contemporary L.A. Art Magazine reviewing shows, interviewing art influencers and covering art world events that will impact how the Los Angeles art scene will be remembered. She also recently opened an experimental art space, Shoebox Projects where artists create work during a month-long residency. Kristine has taught art history at Antelope Valley College and Pasadena City College, formed an artist collective in Los Angeles and has organized and curated numerous art exhibitions throughout Southern California. Kristine was previously the President, social media, advertising and marketing manager of the Brewery Artwalk Association.
