In my teaching studio – ARTSgarage
Cameron Taylor-Brown Los Angeles, CA Age 70
What keeps you excited in the studio? Developing a new idea then seeing where the actual implementation takes me.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? For many years I focused primarily on weaving as my medium and now explore ideas incorporating mixed fiber media – but weaving is still very important.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? That depends on the artist and their particular practice. I see my role as looking at the world through “fresh eyes” and expressing what I see – while encouraging others to look carefully for what they might see.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Keep at it and stay true to your own goals.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not? It matters a bit because of ageism, but I think sexism and art hierarchies are a greater challenge.
What can we look forward to from you next? I’m currently working on a series based on images of a staircase from a former jacquard weavers live/work space in Lyon, France. I’ve completed one piece and have 2 more to work on.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? When I was younger, I had to juggle my artistic practice with a day job and raising a family. Life is simpler now, and I get more studio time!
