What keeps you excited in the studio? I love starting with a sketch and working out some of the details, and then moving forward and creating the piece. Sometimes I’ll make changes, but it’s fantastic to see everything come together!

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? For many years I worked as a graphic designer, but seldom found creative satisfaction in the work. Creating very personal, non-client-based artwork is so rewarding! I still use my design skills, and that quality is very evident in my artwork.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? My role as an artist is to push buttons, make people laugh, create beautiful pieces, address past trauma, and keep moving forward!

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Be kind to yourself. Be thick-skinned. Be open to learning. Get out of your own way!

Does age matter in art? Why or why not? Yes and no! All my life experiences have come together at this point to enable me as an artist. I think there is a mature or seasoned quality to my work. However, younger artists are often fearless, and have a youthful, less-jaded (or not!) approach.

What can we look forward to from you next? Look forward to more button pushing and laughter! I will continue to cultivate that sneaky approach of beautiful artwork with racy content.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? I am so happy! It’s surprising and satisfying to have success and respect at this point in my life.
