60 Over 60: Nancy Mooslin

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

Nancy Mooslin Newport Beach CA Age 77

What keeps you excited in the studio? New work! Whatever I am working on at the moment.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? Ever since graduate school my work has been a progression of the same theme and exploration, a visualization of music using a system I developed 45 years ago. It has taken many forms with a variety of media but always using the same system. I have similar rules and elements to the tools available to a composer of music. The subject of visual music continues to fascinate and compel my art practice.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? Artists alert society to what needs healing and at the same time their work contributes to the healing process.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Work consistently and pursue ideas you are passionate about!

Does age matter in art? Why or why not? Age does not matter but experience and years of making and looking and living and loving and exploring help in the creative process.

What can we look forward to from you next? I look forward to more Artist Residencies in different parts of the world and the work that comes from different cultural and musical experiences.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? My gratitude for the privilege of being able to spend my life making art grows with every year!
