Robert Oblon New Mexico Age 78
What keeps you excited in the studio? Working daily.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? Has changed over the decades and has become even more than I’d hoped for.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? We play an important part of exposing the pulse of contemporary life since the art doesn’t lie.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Don’t become disappointed and no one gets to jump to the head of the line. Only by doing the work is the only way to get your reward.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not? When I was young I thought that it mattered that I gain attention by my thirties. Now on the cusp of my 8th decade I’ve realized to continuing to create has been everything regardless of age.
What can we look forward to from you next? I’m always exploring and jumping back and forth between painting and sculpture. I’m looking a bit ahead and expect to get back with three dimensional paintings.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? I’ve been the most productive the last three years then in any time earlier.
