60 Over 60: Ruud Starke

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

Ruud Starke Amsterdam the Netherlands Age 65

What keeps you excited in the studio? The feeling that something unknown will happen on my canvas, paper etc. The possibility to transform my thoughts into a creative process. The smell of oilpaint, the colors etc.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? I’ve always been experimenting. There isn’t just one thing, thought or way of expressing. I like to explore different things, like one day you like cheese and the other day you like jam.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? I think an artist is someone who asks questions, explores new paths and ideas. Expressing yourself and hoping people get inspired in a wide range.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Don’t care about fame, the artworld, big money, people with great plans etc. Trust yourself and your creativity.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not? Yes age does matter. The artworld is focused on young artist, money and status. Not about art. When you are older it’s so difficult to expose yourself. Young is top, older is not interesting.

What can we look forward to from you next? I still work on my legacy, do exhibitions and follow my owm path.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? Trust yourself, your art and your creativity.
