Sean Leahy Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Age 66
What keeps you excited in the studio? The joy of discovery during the painting.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? It has become more socio political in intent.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? To provoke thought, to pose questions about our times. To nurture the artists spirit and those viewers who can see and feel it.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Decide to make your work your top priority as much as possible each day. All study and appreciation of others art can fuel your practice.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not? It shouldn’t but if you begin late you have less years to build a significant body of work. On the upside age brings a wellspring of inspiration to draw from.
What can we look forward to from you next? Another exhibition at the end of the year. My third.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? Without an established long history entry to the contemporary art world can be very difficult mystifying until you study it deeply and observe certain unspoken protocols.
