Susan (Susie) Coussens

Luton UK

Age 76

What keeps you excited in the studio? Painting.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed? Still emerging…took degree late in life – qualified in 2015.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society? Not sure. But you can only tell your truth and remain as authentic as possible.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist? Just do it. Keep your chin up and keep on going. Being an artist aint easy. Grit and determination are defo assets required.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not? A bit. Why? Constantly asked how my “hobby” is going. Complete shock when they realise i paint nudes…male ones too.

What can we look forward to from you next? Im working out of the Hat Factory in Lutonia and i have been given the 4 large windows and the long gallery (by the loos) to showcase my work for August 2024. Thinking of making 7 new large works to cover my 70 + years but no details as yet!

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life? Living on a pension and buying expensive materials is hard BUT at least you have a fixed income. Younger artists really struggle cos no one really wants to be a starving artist in real life.
