Big Names at BLAM

Alanna Marcelletti, "Wendybird"

Alanna Marcelletti, “Wendybird”

Can’t get out of L.A. this August? Neither can the artists of BLAM. So they are making the best of it by inviting big name artists to share their ideas of travel that isn’t travel. They are presenting a multimedia exhibition that explores notions of mirage—something that is simultaneously there and not there, figments of the imagination, castles in the air, the improbable and impossible.

The art will interpret fantasy, delusions and dreams with renowned photographers such as:

  1. Todd Gray, a professor at California State University, Long Beach, who is also performing a durational piece in conjunction with “Made in LA 2016” at The Hammer Museum,

  2. Andrew Freeman, associate dean in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts, whose work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,

  3. Ruben Ortiz-Torres, a Mexican-born artist living and working in Los Angeles who is a professor at the University of California, San Diego. Ortiz-Torres is widely regarded as one of today’s leading Mexican artists and as an innovator in the 1980s of a specifically Mexican form of postmodernism.

Despite being curated by world-traveling photographer Joe Wolek, this is not just a photography show. Painters, mixed-media artists, videographers, performance artists and a sculptor are included in the exciting the jam-packed exhibition.

Additionally, installation artist Dani Dodge—who recently won a national public art award from the Americans for the Arts—will create a site-specific, immersive, interactive experience in the gallery. The piece will ask participants to examine travel on two levels, both the literal and the figurative: Where do they really want to go in life? Her piece utilizes video, paper airplanes and an instruction booklet to lead participants on an exploration of imagining and actuation.

The opening reception of “On the Distant Horizon” is 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. The opening date is significant, because Aug. 7 is the anniversary of the 1959 launch of Explorer 6, the satellite that sent back the first digitally transmitted images of Earth.

The exhibition will be open on weekends noon to 4 p.m. through Aug. 28. The gallery is located at 1950 S. Santa Fe Ave. #207, Los Angeles, CA 90021.

Artists in “On the Distant Horizon” include: Nadege Monchera Baer, Dani Dodge, Andrew Freeman, Todd Gray, Michael Isenberg, Ben Jackel, Alanna Marcelletti, Hanna Mattes, Jesus Max, Joey Morris, Ruben Ortiz-Torres, Julia Paull, Max Rain, Christopher Rauschenberg, Shelby Roberts, Amy Russell, Mitchell Syrop, Augusta Wood, Kim Ye and Kent Young.

In addition to the art exhibition, Wolek scheduled a series of events in the evenings, titled “Hot August Nights.”

“Hot August Nights” will heat up the gallery with events starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings during August. The evenings will feature international artists with video and image presentations, readings and performances. While they also will focus on interpretations of illusion, the evenings will build upon the inspiration derived from the specificity of a locale.
