With the invention of the steam powered loom, textile production left the realm of handicraft arts and became a mass-market product accessible to everyone at a lower cost. Thankfully, artists continued to find ways to create unique works from the mass produced textiles. By mid-20th century, textile arts flourished with contemporary artists working from graphic design and pop art backgrounds. Textile design became important to the work of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall , Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Ben Nicholson, Sonia Delaunay and Henri Matisse.
It was during this time in our history that Los Angeles artist Sandra Lauterbach’s family entered the textile industry providing the breeding grounds for Sandra’s creative impulses to take shape. In her solo show coming to LA Artcore Brewery Annex, June 5, Sandra draws on her family history in the textile industry; designing, manufacturing and importing colorful fabrics.
Using a sewing machine as a tool for artistic creation, Sandra creates complexity with color and depth to explore dimensions of physical space. This results in a complex layering of materials, free form shape and a three dimensional aspect to the work. Swirls, circles, flowers, patterns, lines, and prints of almost every imaginable color are pieced together to form a complete transcendental piece of time and place.
The exhibition will include 8-10 unique, abstract constructions that become wall sculptures hanging free from past evidence of the mass market product.
About Sandra Lauterbach
Sandra E. Lauterbach is a Los Angeles based contemporary mixed media artist with a studio in Los Angeles. In the 2014 California Open Exhibition at TAG Gallery juried by Laddie John Dill, her work received an Honorable Mention. For three years, her work has been selected for the Los Angeles Art Association’s Open Show which is juried by national museum curators and features the best in emerging art. Her work emphasizes fiber and textiles, however, she often incorporates paint and other mediums. Growing up in the textile industry, she is familiar with the use of fabric and the creation of prints. She uses this knowledge intimately in her work. The careful detail and original use of these mediums has caused Lauterbach’s work to been shown in national and international exhibitions, museums and galleries across the country. The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. is currently exhibiting her work.
