Hyperrealistic Humanity, Guys being Guys, and the occasional Female Touch
Beverly Hills, Calif. – The Beverly Hills artSHOW will hold its free fall event on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Beverly Gardens Park on Santa Monica Boulevard, from Rodeo Drive to Rexford Drive.
Coagula Curatorial, based in Chinatown, Los Angeles, will bring dramatic works of two figurative artists endowed with virtuoso hyperrealistic rendering skills. The focus of their works are social, emotional, or both, so the technical talent is a pleasurable bonus rather than the essence. Neither Michael Rubino or Abel Alejandre shy away from depicting current societal conditions, occasionally enhanced through the symbols of Catholic art history or masculinity, and sometimes featuring our country’s most dominant males.
The large male faces by photographer Gabor Ekecs and painter Steve Jacobsen will gaze at visitors, or not, at the booth of the Los Angeles Art Association’s Gallery 825 Like Mr. Alejandre, their concern with male identity is apparent – but here men are photographed, and then blocked or lined out, as though censored, not allowed to thrive.
The LAAA is also contributing the more cheerful elongated ceramic sculptures of Mary McGill, featuring vivacious, curious women and the occasional cat; all of them are poised to prosper.
The LAAA’s final offering will bring another eye-popping installation to the center of the show in front of the Beverly Hills Sign, this time by artist Snezana Petrovic, who will fashion a shimmering tree and garden bed with all manner of materials, from plastic day-glow baskets to stripped electrical tubing and any other objects she may gather between now and show time!
For lovers of large scale public art in parks, these four blocks of Beverly Gardens are a must-visit. A new Carol Bove sculpture, IO, has just been installed by the City of Beverly Hills Fine Art Commission, on the “Rodeo Block,” near the show’s west side. Work by esteemed contemporary artists like Yayoi Kusama and Magdalena Abakanowicz are also to be seen along the leafy artSHOW lanes.
Another special show feature is: Drenched, Dehydrated, Driven by Wind: Weather in Art, which will highlight nearly 20 artists portraying wild or extreme weather conditions in various media, as well as a special 3-D installation that provides an interactive experience in outer space weather!
In addition to art, a wine garden, food trucks, a beer garden, live entertainment, and family activities will be offered. All show artists will be on site to talk with visitors about their work. All art is for sale, and patrons come from Southern California and beyond to shop, collect and savor this art-filled weekend.
Category awards and major show awards, including the Best of Show and Most Original Work, will be announced in a Sunday afternoon ceremony, at the show’s center, in front of the Lily Pond.
The 2015 artSHOW sponsors and media partners include: David Frank Design, Engel & Volkers, Shoebox PR, the LA Weekly, the Los Angeles Art Association, Fabrik Magazine, LA Art Party, Yelp, Whole Foods Market, Paley Center for Media, and the Beverly Hills Conference and Visitor’s Bureau. Food and Beverage support come from Whole Foods Market, Premiere Events, Beck’s Beer and Hint Water. The show’s charitable partner is Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and its sister organization, Healing Art with Kids.
